What are Ground-Source Heat Pumps?

Ground-source heat pumps derive heat taken from the ground, raise the temperature and then convert it into heating. When installed at properties in the Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or Surrey areas, they work to the same cycle as domestic refrigerators, but in reverse. This is how they create hot water and spatial heating.

Our ground-source heat pump installers can also set passive circuits to fulfil low-level cooling demands for your home, or active circuits when cooling demands are higher. When heating and cooling modes are utilised, the annual performance of ground-source heat pumps are high enough to ensure exceptional fuel savings and impressive carbon reduction.

How Efficient are Ground-Source Heat Pumps?

Homeowners in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Surrey opt for ground-source heat pumps because of their exceptional efficiency. For each KW/h of energy needed to run the pump itself, the system generates up to 4 KW/h of energy. This comparison of energy-supplied to energy-consumed is known as the Co-efficiency of Performance (CoP).

Think of it as buying one KW/h of energy and getting a further three for free!

A typical installation will include:

  • Ground-Source Heat Pump
  • Ground Collector Array
  • Manifold
  • Manifold Pit
  • Buffer Tank
  • Circulation Pumps
  • Expansion Vessel
  • Hot Water Cylinders
  • Manual and Automatic Valves
  • Weather-Compensated Control Systems

Our ground-source heat pump installers can work with the existing elements of your heating system to keep costs down. And, because we carry out heat pump servicing and heat pump repairs, you’ll always have affordable, reliable options to keep your new installation working at full efficiency.

How do Ground-Source Heat Pumps Work?

Ground-source heat pumps compress solar energy derived from the ground to create a source of heating and hot water. The principles of the system start with heat absorption from vertical and horizontal pipes buried in a borehole, or even laid in a body of water. This absorption is achieved by circulating water and antifreeze through a closed system.

Because temperatures 1m beneath the ground stay consistent, heat stored at these depths has little to do with geothermal heat. In fact, it relies much more on energy from the sun, rainfall and migrating ground water. As ground-source heat pump installers, we capitalise on this.

  1. Heat is absorbed from the source through closed collection systems containing a mix of water and vegetable-based antifreeze.
  2. Energy transfers through the refrigerant in the pump’s evaporation heat exchanger.
  3. Vaporised refrigerant compresses to increase the initial temperature source by around 50%. This is the core principle behind ground-source heat pumps.
  4. The refrigerant enters the condenser and transfers energy to the medium heat circuit. This creates spatial heating for Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Surrey homes through traditional radiators or underfloor heating.

Steve Cross Heat Pumps can explain the principles of ground-source systems to you in detail during an initial consultation and site survey. We provide written quotations without obligation. Our company provides a complete service, covering everything from the initial installation to future heat pump servicing and heat pump repairs on all ground-source and air-source models.

Our handy location in Oxfordshire makes it easy for our ground-source heat pump installers to reach all surrounding Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Surrey locations. This includes key service areas like Abingdon, Banbury, the Cotswolds, Oxford and Witney.
